Current Offerings

Learning for its own sake is crucial for human flourishing. Our courses are organized around the shared study of great books and related subjects. All of our courses consist of live meetings, usually online but sometimes in-person. We offer no credits and we charge no tuition.

You can read more about the types of courses we offer below.

Fall 2026

September 14 - January 19, 2027

Applications Open Deadline: August 15, 2026

Reading Groups

In a reading group, you choose one or more great books to study and meet regularly for discussions with a group of 8-15 peers. Discussions are led by an experienced reader and guide in conversation in accordance with our discussion guidelines and core principles.

Intensive Reading Groups

Intensive reading groups are an opportunity to go deeper with one's own thinking and the thinking of others. The size of the group is smaller, allowing each reader more conversational space, and readers are asked to write and share short weekly reflection papers.

Subject Tutorials

Subject tutorials offer focused study in a particular discipline or topic with a small group of dedicated readers, guided by a group leader with deep expertise in the subject.

Core Program

Consisting of four 12-week courses, our Core Program offers a way into the study of great books and introduces readers to our approach to learning through discussion. Learn more about the Core Program.

Core I

Life of the Mind Seminar

The Core Program begins with an introductory and intensive seminar that seeks to open up the territory of great books to beginners. 10-15 readers will explore a selection of texts that serve as excellent introductions to enduring ideas and questions. Each Seminar is co-led by two experienced guides who are zealous about their own learning. Seminars meet once a week for 2 hours and readers are asked to prepare a question about each week’s reading prior to meetings.

Core II–IV

Ancient Greek Foundations

Open to all readers who have completed the preceding Core seminars, Core II-IV invite 7 readers to explore a given author or text in the company of a guide who is serious about their own learning and experienced in leading discussion. Each Seminar meets once a week for 2 hours and readers are required to prepare a brief piece of writing (300-600 words) about the week’s reading prior to each meeting.

Instead of writing weekly reflection papers, readers will be asked to commit to memorizing at least one sonnet per week from our shared reading. We hope that adopting (or struggling with) this shared practice will help us to reflect deeply on the poems we read, as well as on the relationship between our reading and our thinking. We will read Dante's Vita Nuova (around 90 pages in most translations) for our first meeting, and after that we will read 5–10 sonnets per week, all in English and all from The Penguin Book of the Sonnet. We will focus on one poet per week, to include (probably) Wyatt, Sidney, Spenser, Wroth, Shakespeare, Donne, Wordsworth, Browning, Hopkins, Millay, Berryman, and Brooks, with flexibility based on readers' interest.

Classical Arabic is the language of the Qur’an and most Arabic literature before the 20th century, and the foundation of Modern Standard Arabic. The course will begin with the script; no prior knowledge is required. Arabic is not an easy language, so those with no prior experience studying a foreign language should be prepared to spend more time than usual at the beginning. If participants are interested, there will be an extra grammar hour each week. We anticipate offering Part 2 in the spring, at the end of which participants will have a solid foundation.

Notes

This tutorial will use high school algebra as an invitation to serious mathematical thinking. Every week, readers will share a written solution to a problem of their choosing with the group. A couple participants each week will be asked to present their solutions as a way to practice sharing their thought processes and any insights they had while doing the problem. The discussion will be centered around about 10 pages of text a week as the discussion over each chapter can go quite deep and math rewards slow, careful consideration.

This tutorial meets in-person in Manhattan, New York City.
